The program, written by the Belgian Robert Houdart, is known for finding tricks and resources in positions that just can’t be cracked by other engines. Now, with the release of its latest incarnation, Houdini 4, the engine has been improved significantly across the board.

Hi, Im planning to use c4d for vfx. Now the available plugins are nitroblast, xparticles, turbulencefd and realflow.I know houdini is hard to learn but its worth it? All the examples that I found of those plugins are for motion graphics stuff and all very 'psycodelic' stuff. Nothing like debris, dust, complex destructions.

If those plugins could do serious (not super complicated of course) stuff I would choose c4d to stay in the same ecosystem. So what do you thing? Also the render engine would be octane. Thanks! Mantra is a pain to learn, but so is Renderman. These are old render engines.

They are complex, but really powerful. If you want simplicity, than Arnold and Corona are the safest bet. While Houdini is very complex, we must not delude ourselfs thinking it's possible to create realistic destruction FX with just simple sliders. There's a lot of thinking and customizing that goes into turning a simple fracture (for example) into something that looks real.

If you search on Vimeo, you'll find a lot of destruction videos and 90% are really bad. The ones that are good, require complex setups.

Houdini allows that and Thinking Particles too. At least for now anyway. Maybe some new software will change this in the future. Houdini bridge is pretty awesome, and Cinema is quite a comfortable program to get a quick render out of. I've noticed a lot of advanced C4D users picking up houdini as it offers a lot that C4D doesn't natively.

Maya is a very deep program with a lot more capabilities that overlap with houdini, so there's less of a need to use it combined with houdini (not to say people don't though).Arnold and Redshift are different render engines, and Redshift isn't out for cinema (yet! I am very excited to play with it when it goes into alpha).I've worked with these guys in the past, they are advanced C4D dudes who are now using Houdini a lot. Inspiring stuff!
